Creating The Media

I will be shooting both photos and videos on the journey whenever I have the time and opportunity. I'll routing thru some beautiful but very varied country and cities, and it would be a shame not to capture what I see.

Nikon Z7ii

Nikon Z7ii

For nearly 19 years I took my Nikon D300 digital SLR almost everywhere I went, and I "went" a lot and to a lot of places all over the world. But last year I decided it was finally time to upgrade into the fully digital mirrorless camera world, so I invested in a Nikon Z7ii, and gave my D300 to a young man who loved photography but couldn't afford a digital camera.

This was much more of a change than it might seem at first because for the first time in decades, Nikon changed the lens mount on their new camera bodies. Although they loudly proclaimed that a converter was available to enable the use of F mount lenses on the new Z mount cameras, that converter won't work with 2 out of the 3 F mounts that I own. Nice one Nikon. So I will be taking only my Nikkor S 24-70/4 S lens with me.

The good news is that the functionality of the Z7ii is enhanced compared to the D300 and image quality and color is stunning. It also takes 4k high definition video and has plenty of card storage even for video. I have left my Nikon SB900 flash unit at home because with the capabilities of the Z7ii I find that I almost never use flash these days.

Nikon Coolpix P340

Nikon P340

I will also have with me my Nikon P340 pocket camera in case I have to grab a quick shot and don't have time to prep the Z7ii. It's not my favorite camera at all, has no viewfinder, the digital screen is hard to see in any sort of bright daylight, let alone the sun, and it has comparitively fewer functions.

But..... it does have one very important saving grace over all of the pocket cameras when I bought it. It shoots in RAW format, so I can easily process the shots in Lightroom.

iPhone 11

From iPhone 11 onwards image capture has been exceptional and has certainly improved a lot since I bought this iPhone many years ago. But it's even more handy than having that Nikon P340 in my pocket because that's too big for my trouser pockets but the iPhone isn't and is always handy. I can take a shot in seconds. The downside is that it take shots in HEIC format (it will shoot in JPG but at the expense of uality).

When this iPhone came out Photoshop, Lightroom and Camera Raw could not process HEIC, but today all three can, so I have left HEIC as the default setting.

Dashcams

The Subaru Outback is fitted with a Viofo A329S Series cam Package with a Sony STARVIS 4k 8MP IMX678 facing front and a Sony STARVIS 2k 5MP IMX675facing rear. It records GPS on the footage, has wide angled lenses and can provide a combined front/rear image too. The image quality is easily high enough to grab single shots.

Processing

RAW and HEIC shots are processed in Adobe Lightroom, with occasional help from full Adobe Photoshop if I need to do something not available in Lightrrom, though this is rare.

All video is processed in Abode Premier Pro with help in processing the soundtrack from Adobe Audition, though this is also rare.

Translation of any video media between formats is done in Adobe Media Encoder.
